November 11, 2013: Dr. Shelly Batra, President, Operation ASHA nominated as Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2013 finalist
The Jubilant Bhartia Foundation, organizes the SEOY India Award in association with the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship every year. This was the 9th year of SEOY India awards.
This time SEOY India Awards received a record 209 applications. Through a five-stage selection process, the four finalists shortlisted after on-site visits, background research, reference checks and multiple rounds of deliberations.
The judges included Sudha Pillai, Member Secretary, Planning Commission, India; Shobhana Bhartia, Chairperson and Editorial Director, HT Media, India; Harish Hande, Managing Director, SELCO Solar Light, India, and a Ramon Magsaysay Award winner for year 2011; Hilde Schwab, Chairperson and Co-Founder, Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, Switzerland; Kavita Ramdas, Representative, Ford Foundation, India; Anshu Gupta, Founder and Director, Goonj, India, and last year’s winner of the award; and Rohini Nilekani, Chairperson, Arghyam Foundation, India
For the first time in the SEOY India Award, all the finalists were women social entrepreneurs, making this a special year.
Dr. Shelly Batra, President, Operation ASHA was one of the finalist. Other finalists were Breakthrough Trust (founded by Mallika Dutt), Mann Deshi Mahila Bank and Mann Deshi Foundation (founded by Chetna Vijay Sinha) and Yuva Parivartan/ Kherwadi Social Welfare Association (led by Mrinalini Kher and Kishore Kher).
An independent panel of pre-eminent judges met on 11 November to select the winner. The awards were conferred on same day in New Delhi at a high-level celebration, in the presence of Indian Finance Minister P Chidambaram.
